Bad Romance...

Ok so one of my favorite RPG game developers is BioWare. They were originally known for their fantasy RPG series Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter Nights both based on the pen and paper RPG franchise: Dungeons & Dragons. Now in 2003 they made a takeoff hit with Lucas Arts in the form of Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic (KOTOR). KOTOR was one of the best games of that generation hands down. It added awesome features such as a morality system; however something else it did was give depth to the point you could form relationships with your party members. This even allowed for romantic relationships with a few characters. This would become a staple in future BioWare games. With the new found success BioWare ventured away from licensed games and began creating original IPs. Now in 2007 BioWare made their spiritual Star Wars successor Mass Effect.

Mass Effect was a science fiction/action RPG that followed similar mechanics to BioWare’s past RPGs. It had a morality system, and it went one further with the romances. What I mean by one further is KOTOR, as an example, would only show the characters kiss and then fade to black where it is implied that the horizontal mambo happened. Mass Effect took it one further with a tasteful soft scene without any visible naught bits. Well this sent parents into an uproar; not only did a video game have sex but it’s possible for a bisexual option. Parents went into fits of rage. Well here is where things began to get interesting. BioWare answered parent’s complaint with Baldur’s Gate’s spiritual successor Dragon Age: Origins.

Dragon Age is BioWare’s fantasy RPG that kept mechanics similar to Mass Effect’s, including relationships. Dragon Age had not one but two bisexual options one male one female. The scene has more of everything more body and more romance. However, all the naught parts were still covered. The scene was very PG-13, but parents will do what parents do, and point figures at problems that are really their fault (see South Park Bigger Longer and Uncut for further explanation). Well BioWare in turn responded with a more PG answer in the sequels.

Both Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age 2 while almost doubling your romance options, the scenes were tame. Most of the scenes were cloths on with an occasional flash of ladies undies. As progress goes, this was very disappointing, as sex was a topic of discussion within the party quite frequently. Now, because of this there’s no outcry from parents. Mass Effect 3 was able to go back to business as usual.

Mass Effect 3: the end of the Shepard trilogy. This game, like the others before it, also had what the internet calls “the sex”. These scenes were more like Dragon Age: Origins’s scenes. Now, I thought nothing of it until I was watching the Video Game Awards and saw this video:

Well that led me to look into it and boy howdy did BioWare ever stop giving a flying fuck. I won’t spoil anything from Dragon Age: Inquisition (What a show!), but along with that M rating comes a nudity tag and we aren’t talking side boob here. In this latest installment we get full frontal nudity, minus the genitals, along with a clever pitching and catching joke that even made me blush a bit. Now, I’m going to go play Dragon Age: Origins.
