It Came From Japan: Hey Digimon Hey Digimon
So today November 21st doesn't really have any special meaning to most of us here in America, however to those of us who are fans of a certain personal digital monster franchises it's a day that stands with excitement and a modest bit of jealousy. Today in Japan the film series Digimon Adventure Tri starts with it's First movie titled "Saikai" (Reunion), These New Movies reunite the character of the original Digimon Adventure (season 1 in the US) on a new adventure to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the show. So with all this happening and no news on the US release (as of this writing). I'd Figure I take a look at the original 4 Digimon Adventure Movies.
Confused, say that there was only 1 Digimon movie and the TV special. Well you'd be half right in the US there was only the one theatrical film and the 4th movie was released as a TV special and I will talk about both of those as well when the time calls for it but 1st we start with the 1st film Digimon Adventure The Movie
Digimon Adventure The Movie follows Taichi (Tai in the US) and his little sister Hikari (Kari) as they discover there 1st Digimon and the Adventure that follows. The Cool thing about this movie is two things. First the movie premiered exactly one day before the 1st episode of the 1st season did in japan and 2nd the movie would tie into the show which most anime at the time did not do. Now as for plot of this film it's not that deep it just laid the ground work for the show. The Movie however would have a total different tone than the show. The Movie toward it's climax felt more like a kiaju movie and less like the Shonen tone of the show. The movie was a lot of fun and a great introduction to the world of Digimon. The Next Film is Digimon Adventure Our War Game!.
Our War Game! is the 2nd film in the Digimon Adventure series and it takes place after our heroes save both worlds. This film liken the last one changes theming from the show but not as extreme as the last one. This Movie keep the shonen theme but adds cyberpunk elements. The Plot of the film follow the birth of a virus Digimon, not to be confused with a Virus type Digimon, called Diablomon (Diaboromon). The Major action based part of the movie focuses on dealing with Diaboromon, while the more comedic part deals with kid and their real world problems. The movie also introduce a new evolution combining Wargreymon and Metalgarurumon into Omegamon (Omnimon). The move was action pack and had enough humor to balance and was very enjoyable. This would be the last movie with the original Digimon Adventure series the Next film Continues in Digimon Adventure 02 with Digimon Hurricane Landing!!/Transcendent Evolution!! The Golden Digimentals.
Movie three is the most confusing one and my least favorite. It's confusing because it was split into two parts because of it's length which almost makes sense if you know anything about Japaneses movies based on anime. Now this film is the only film that more than likely not canon given it's nature. The 1st part deals with the original kids minus Takeru (T.K.) and Kari diapering the new heroes going to America to find them. The reason for all of this happening because of new character Wallace (Willis) and his twin Digimon Gummymon and Kokomon. The 2nd part answers the a lot of the question and sets up the climatic battle. my problem with this movie is the pacing when the characters are traveling or discussing the events the film uses music to set the mood. In contrast the action scenes lack any music making them kinda boring and dry. The story with Willis mimics Ken story a little with roles reversed, but other than that this movie doesn't have a lot going on. There is still hope Digimon Adventure 02 with the next movie Diablomon Strikes Back.
Diablomon Strikes Back is a direct equals to Our War Game! this movie like Our War Game! takes place after the end of season 2 but before the epilogue. The movie plot is simple Diaboromon seeks revenge and to enter the real world by send millions of copies of his in training form to the real world. The movie parallels the 2nd movie but at the same time expands on it. The film balances humor and action just like Our War Game! and shows what every character is doing this time though it only focuses on Ken, Daisuke (Davis), and their Digimon. This movie is a lot of fun and very exciting to watch. That's every movie the only thing left is the Dubs.
Digimon The Movie what can say as a kid I loved it I even love the soundtrack. This movie combines movies 1,2, and 3. The Movie holds tight to the stories of the films except for the last part. Other than localisation of the dialog, the mild censorship of violence, and cutting the bulk of movie 3 to fit with the narrative of the story this is a ok movie to watch . On the cutting of the 3rd film they did so to make Diaboromon responsible for Kokomon and they inserted Willis as one of the kids who Izzy corresponds with about Diaboromon. All in all it still fun to watch. The last localisation at least for the Adventure seasons is Revenge of Diaboromon.
Revenge of Diaboromon was released on TV by Disney to promote the Data Squad season and like the one above didn't do much changing of story only a little censoring on the violence. The only complaint I have is one of the voice actor didn't return. If you can find it it's worth a watch.
So that quick look at the 4 Digimon Adventure movies I am looking forward Digimon Adventure Tri and crossing my fingers it gets localized.
