Press Start to Continue: The Best Toy Commercial I Have Ever Played

So this month I started a Let's Play in Transformers Devastation and 6 videos later I finished it. Now as I play through the game my nostalgia but got press more often then I pressed dodge. So after finishing it I figured I'd sit down and review Transformers Devastation.

Transformers Devastation is an action platformer in the style of Devil May Cry, God of War, and many others. Published by Activision, developed by Platinum Games, and directed by Kenji Saito the director of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.

Story

The Story of Transformers Devastation is simple the Decepticons discover a long lost Cybertronian ship. On it is a lost power source of plasma energy. When activated the ship sends the insecticons into a frenzy and starts cyberforming the planet. Prime and other Autobots move to stop them. The story is fun but lacking it makes the assumption that the player know enough about the Transformers to not need much of a set up. It tells some background information in the form of logs that are hidden trough out the chapters of the games, however you still have to find and read those. Outside of the story the characters are spot on and the events unfold like a episode of the old 80s cartoon. The Story while it takes cues from both the G1 cartoon and the IDW comics it is the weakest part of the game.

Gameplay

The gameplay is solid and much like the games I mentioned and relies heave of the use of combos. The minor difference is the use of guns.  The major difference is the ability to transform. The game adds several unique combos that finish in a transformation attack. There are also challenges and level traversing that sometimes require you to be in vehicle/dino mode. There is one major problem with the way the gameplay use the transformations. Transforming, Dodging, and the combo finishers are all the same button. Many time while in combat I would transform instead of dodging. This action would slow down gameplay greatly. Now other than that the games lets you play as different Autobots. They playable characters are Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Sideswipe, Wheeljack, and Grimlock. Each Character has a two abilities special to them one power attack and the other a super attack called overdrive. The game also includes and leveling system that raise stats as you defeat enemies and complete missions as well as rase depending on how you play the game as well. On top of that you can also spend xp to raise states out side of combat for any character. The game also provides you with different equipment like ranged and melee weapons and tech chips which enhance different parts of the characters. There many different types of weapons with different functions  that range from hammers to sniper rifles. These weapons can also be upgraded by combining them together to make a better one.  Tech chip are made with a mini game the requires you to stop on the right spot to optimise the chip. All of the functions above combining weapons and making tech chips use the XP the game provides you with. The game play is strong and fun though the shared button problem can often be frustrating when you trying to doge and you transform and then when you try and change back you just keep dodging.

Final Thoughts

Transformers Devastation is as I stated in the title the best toy commercial I have ever played. The gameplay is solid with a few flow issues. The story is simple and nostalgic but not very deep. As a fan of the franchise I enjoyed it greatly and had a ton of fun. The game is short but that doesn't hurt it at all. If you are a Fan or are just looking for a quick beat em up with with over the top  action then is a game I highly recommend you buy it.
